Fall Windsurfing At Tourmaline

Posted on November 26th, by San Diego Windsurfing Association in SDWA News, Sessions. No Comments

Although San Diego has shut down for the season for most sailors, there have been a few moments of bliss to be had at our local wave spot Tourmaline.  A few Santa Ana days have lit up an otherwise quiet and uneventful fall and for those who were there on those days we have had some decent surf and marginal++ winds.  Here are a few pictures and a video of the Tourmo crew doing there thing.  I do apologize for the picture quality, they were all shot with my phone with only digital zoom which sorta trashed the quality.

J Street Windsurfing 11/1/14

Posted on November 4th, by San Diego Windsurfing Association in Newsletters, SDWA News, Sessions. No Comments

The San Diego Windsurfing Association met up Saturday Nov 1st for it’s monthly races. The usual crew showed up including Robert V, Kelly, Dan, Nina, Tuan and Gregg. The formula sailors opted to not race but rather do runs to the Coronado bridge and get some screaming runs in the flat water on the opposite shore near Coronado. In the 15-18mph winds the formula sailors were getting pretty wound up with Robert on a 12m, Tuan on a 10m, and Nina on her 8.5m.

Kelly and Dan opted for the 105 liter Starboard Hypersonic. For Kelly this turned out to be a frustrating experience as it’s a full sinker for him, and Dan got a few planing runs in even with a 7.0 wave sail. The wind picked up however and the shortboarders got out to play. Dan was able to … Read More »

2014 End of Season Picnic

Posted on September 13th, by San Diego Windsurfing Association in Newsletters, SDWA News. No Comments

Wow, what a great “End of the Season” picnic! We had food, wind, and a special guest: Professional Windsurfer Francisco Goya!

The wind started early and was strong between 12 and 2 before turning completely north and shutting down.  The formula racers were out doing runs between buoys while some new windsurfers got lessons on the beginner equipment.  Wind-wise it was successful for everyone.

A special thank you to the Party Committee for preparing the food: Aliza, Dawn, and Amy, but another special Thank you to Dan’s restaurants who donated the Gouda Mac & Cheese from Prospect Bar of La Jolla, and the Azifah Fit Fit, The cool lentil salad from Muzita Bistro in University Heights.

Thank you to Paul O. for taking the time out of sailing to take the great Pictures, and to Brent C. who took the time to take … Read More »

Xavier GBR451 at the Bridge to Bridge Race San Fran

Posted on September 12th, by San Diego Windsurfing Association in General Windsurfing News, Racing Results, SDWA News. No Comments

A big congratulations to our very own SDWA member Xavier GBR451 for winning the Ronstan Bridge to Bridge race in San Francisico Formula division.  The Ronstan Bridge to Bridge Race is a multicraft downwind sprint from the Golden Gate Birdge to the Bay Bridge on San Francisco Bay.  The field includes skiffs, kites, cats, trimarans and windsurfers.  Here is a play by play direct from Xavier’s blog!

This was my first Bridge to Bridge race, so I didn’t really know what to expect. All I knew about this famous race was that legends such as Micah Buziani had held the record for many years before the Kites smashed the record. Johnny Heineken had run the whole course on one tack last year on a Hydrofoil Kite in the record time of 16 minutes I think. With all Those histories floating in my … Read More »

Andrew and Steve at The AWT Punta San Carlos

Posted on August 27th, by San Diego Windsurfing Association in General Windsurfing News, SDWA News. No Comments

Essentially the AWT is the result of one person’s ( Sam Bittner) effort to re-ignite interest in wave-sailing competitions in the USA. Every year the AWT holds events in Santa Cruz, Pistol River, Peru, Punta San Carlos, Cape Hatteras and Maui. They also participate in other windsurfing events around and about, such as at the Gorge. The number of competitors ranges from 40-100 depending on location. They have divisions for Pro, Amateurs, Masters (>45), Grand Masters (>55), Women and Youth.

For those of you who don’t know what the AWT is – see http://americanwindsurfingtour.com

It was a tough week at the AWT in Punta San Carlos for both competitors and especially the organizers with a lack of consistent wind. PSC is located about 350 miles south of San Diego down Baja Hwy 1. If you do not stay at Solo Sports , which … Read More »

June 2014 Picnic

Posted on June 14th, by San Diego Windsurfing Association in SDWA News. Comments Off on June 2014 Picnic

With new SDWA board members and many new members it was a different concept this year than in the years past. A suggestion to have a “Chili Cook off” created by Mike & Dawn turned out to be a great success.

The food was plenty, with 4 entries for the Chili contest. Winner was: “Dawn Patrol” although, Mike’s “El Miguel” hot chili was a close second place. There was not a drop left of any chili by 2pm. We had plenty of Chicken legs from Aliza and David’s recipe, salads, and last deserts. A special Thank you to Mike & Dawn for remembering Amy’s Birthday with a chocolate mousse cake, wow, was that Tasty!

The wind was very light, challenging our light wind sailing skills, but the big sails did get some good speed in the downwind runs.

The turn out very one of … Read More »
