Site Name: J Street
Location: South Bay, Bayfront Park Chula Vista, CA San Diego Bay
Skill Lever: Beginner to Advanced
Typical Sailing Conditions: Wind 10-13 knots from the W or WSW, typically starting in the late mornings and blows through the afternoon. Winter storms can bring strong south winds, typically preceding a storm.
Water: Salt water shallow in some areas, mid 65 degrees in summer.
Boards: Medium boards can be used 120-140l Volume in normal conditions, 80-100 liter boards in storm weather. Remember San Diego winds can be finicky especially in a storm so rig according to what you can sail back to start in case the winds drop suddenly.
Sails: 4.0-10.0 m
Water Conditions: San Diego Bay comes with mild swell and small chop. The boats enter and exit posts that are in front of the launch site and you need to be aware of them. Sometimes they cannot see you. Boats must go 5 mph through this channel, but sometimes they do not. Low tides = muddy shore and a little walk with your gear.
Wind notes: As with most of the San Diego Sailing sites, the winds are driven by a standard of Coastal onshore flow. However the occasional storm in late fall/winter/spring can bring good winds from the South and South West.
Rigging and Launching Notes: There is a nice grassy area with plenty of room to rig even on the busiest days. The Launch is a sandy Beach. Beware of the many stingrays in the shallow waters and shuffle your feet. Wear booties as rocks have barnacles and sometimes broken glass can be found in the shallows
Other Notes: Public restrooms are at the site. Grassy rigging area.
Parking and Fees: Very limited parking. Afternoon in summer months it is almost impossible to get a space. Go early to be sure to get a spot. Parking is Free.
Directions to Site: Take interstate 5 south exit Marina Parkway, right J street, go North about 1 mile follow the water, go right into Parking lot. Use GPS address Bayfront Park, Chula Vista, San Diego.
